From Late Latin *abyssimus, from Latin abyssus (a bottomless gulf), from Ancient Greek ἄβυσσος (ábussos, bottomless), ἀ- (a-, not) + βυσσός (bussós, depth). Displaced Old Galician-Portuguese avisso.
