Alternative forms

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit ‎اڢْچَنْ (afgan, slave, captive), from Proto-Berber. Cognate with Nefusa ڢُجْنُتَنْ (fuǧnuten, the worshipers, the pious).

The semantic development from "slave" to "human" is likely shaped by the Islamic theological concept of human servitude to God. A parallel development is seen in Hindustani بَنْدَہ / बंदा (bandā).
