Inherited from Old Spanish axedrez, borrowed from Arabic شِطْرَنْج (šiṭranj) via Andalusian Arabic, from Middle Persian 𐭰𐭠𐭲‎𐭫𐭠𐭭𐭢 (cʾt‎lʾng /⁠čatrang⁠/), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga).
