Hungarian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Ugric *ȣjɜ- ‎(come off, get looser, get free).[1]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈɒjtoː/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: aj‧tó

Noun[edit]

ajtó ‎(plural ajtók)

  1. door (portal of entry into a building or room)

Declension[edit]

Two types of the possessive exist. The one with stem change is mostly used for an "immediate" possession such as a room or a house having a door. To express that a person has a door, the one formation without stem change is used (although in some dialects the stem changed version is used at all places). This is why "ajtajam" is rare, except in dialects.
