From Late Latin apocryphus (secret, not approved for public reading), from Ancient Greek ἀπόκρυφος (apókruphos, hidden, obscure, thus “(books) of unknown authorship”), from ἀπό (apó, from) + κρύπτω (krúptō, I hide).
