Etymology[edit]

Borrowing from Bulgar *burǝʷu (calf)[1] (a Chuvash-type Turkic language) before the times of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries). Compare Chuvash пăру (păru, calf), Old Turkic 𐰉𐰆𐰕𐰍𐰆 (buzaɣu), Ottoman Turkish بوزاغی (buzağı, calf). The word can also be found in the Mongolic languages. The form that arrived in the Hungarian language was probably *buraɣu.[2]
