Etymology

From Latin *carnem ligat (literally ties the meat). Akin to Aromanian cãrleagã. Compare similar formations in carnival, Italian carnevale from *carnem levāre, Lua error in Module:parameters at line 159: Parameter 1 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value it-oit is not valid. See WT:LOL, WT:LOL/E and WT:LOF. from *carnem laxāre, and Spanish carnestolendas (three days preceding the beginning of Lent) from *carnis tollendus.
