Etymology
Sino-Vietnamese word from 洲歐, composed of 洲 (“continent”) and 歐 (“Europe”). Borrowed from Chinese 歐洲/欧洲 (Ōuzhōu), but cast in Vietnamese word order, with the noun preceding the modifier. Usage of this term has almost completely replaced usage of the direct loan Âu châu (歐洲) in Vietnam.
