From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Galician-Portuguese companna, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Vulgar Latin *compānia, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Late Latin compāniō (whence also French compagnon, Italian compagnone), from cum + pānis. Compare Galician compaña and Spanish compaña.
