From Middle Dutch donresdach, donredach, from Old Dutch *thonaresdag, from Proto-West Germanic *Þunras dag (day of the thunder god). Equivalent to Donar or donder +‎ dag.

Donar (North Germanic: Thor) was the Germanic god of the thunder.
