Etymology[edit]

Apparently named from the goddess Ēastre, from Proto-Germanic *Austrǭ, from a suffixed form of Indo-European *āus- ‘dawn’. Cognate with Old Frisian āsteron, Old High German ōstarūn (German Ostern).
