From Ancient Greek ἐπιγραφή (epigraphḗ, inscription), from ἐπιγράφω (epigráphō, write upon), from ἐπῐ- (epi-, on, upon, over, etc.) +‎ γρᾰ́φω (gráphō, to draw, paint, write, etc.).
