Etymology
From Old Galician-Portuguese escoller, equivalent to es- + colher, or possibly from a Vulgar Latin *excolligere, from Latin ex- + colligere, present active infinitive of colligō (“I gather”). Compare Galician escoller, Spanish escoger, Catalan escollir.
