Etymology[edit]

From Old Galician and Old Portuguese escoller (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), possibly from a Vulgar Latin *excolligere, from Latin ex- + colligere, present active infinitive of colligō (I gather). Compare Portuguese escolher, Spanish escoger, Catalan escollir.
