From earlier escuitar, from Old Portuguese ascuitar, ascoitar, from Vulgar Latin *ascultāre, from Latin auscultāre, present active infinitive of auscultō (I listen). Cognate with Galician escoitar, Spanish escuchar, Catalan escoltar, Occitan escotar, French écouter, Italian ascoltare and Romanian asculta. Doublet of auscultar.
