Spanish[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from English stan (an overly zealous fan) + -ear.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /estaneˈaɾ/ [es.t̪a.neˈaɾ]
  • Rhymes: -aɾ
  • Syllabification: es‧ta‧ne‧ar

Verb[edit]

estanear (first-person singular present estaneo, first-person singular preterite estaneé, past participle estaneado)

  1. (transitive, fandom slang) to stan

Usage notes[edit]

  • Spanish orthography requires a vowel be placed before or after a word-initial s, hence why some Spanish speakers insert vowels (more specifically e) into English words without vowels before or after the word-initial s. For example, they may pronounce stop as estop or scared as escared. Therefore, an e is inserted into the beginning of this word even though the English word that was borrowed to make this word, stan, does not have an e.
