[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish گوز آتمق (göz atmaḳ, “to cast one's eye on any thing, to conceive a desire for”),[1] equivalent to compound of göz (“eye”) + atmak (“to throw”), literally “to throw (one's) eye”.
