[edit]From gempa (“tremor; quake”) + bumi (“earth”) from Sanskrit भूमिकम्प (bhūmikampa, “earthquake”) with further influence of English earthquake from भूमि (bhūmi, “earth”) + कम्प (kampa, “quake”) (compare with Hindi भूकंप (bhūkamp, “earthquake”), Marathi भूकंप (bhūkampa, “earthquake”)), also reanalysable as gempa (“tremor”) + bumi (“earth”). Displaced lindu.
