From Proto-Germanic *haglaz, probably from Proto-Indo-European *kagʰlos (pebble). Cognate with Old Frisian heil (West Frisian heil), Old Saxon hagal (Low Low German Hagel), Dutch hagel, Old High German hagal (German Hagel), Old Norse hagl (Danish and Icelandic hagl, Swedish hagel).
