Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from 侯爵, composed of (noble; marquis) and (nobility rank), literally "the rank of a marquis; marquisate". Mainly refers to the European rank. The Chinese rank did not include the suffix (tước), thus simply (hầu). See also công hầu bá tử nam.
