Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from (duke), (marquis), (count) and (viscount), from Chinese 公侯伯子男. Compare Japanese 公侯伯子男 (kōkōhakushidan). The correspondence between the Chinese and European ranks were wholly accidental, but were institutionalized in Qing China and Meiji Japan.
