Borrowed from Mandarin 漢字汉字 (hànzì, Han characters), from Middle Chinese (xàn, Han dynasty, China) + (dzì, [written] character). Compare Cantonese 漢字汉字 (hon3 zi6), Min Nan 漢字汉字 (hàn-jī, hàn-lī) and Japanese 漢字 (kanji).
