Etymology[edit]

Coined by Finnish folk poetry researcher, translator and journalist Julius Krohn in 1862, from happo (acid). Declension as an e-stem rather than an i-stem noun is modeled after typpi (nitrogen), also introduced by Krohn as an element name.
