From Middle Dutch herfst, from Old Dutch *hervist, from Proto-Germanic *harbistaz, from Proto-Indo-European *kerp-. Cognate with German Herbst, Low German Harvst, West Frisian hjerst, English harvest; further with Latin carpere (to pick, to pluck), Greek καρπός (karpós, fruit, harvest). The original meaning was “harvest time”, as is seen in herfstmaand.
