Etymology
From Old High German hiutu, a contraction of earlier *hiu tagu, a relict instrumental case form meaning “on this day”. Compare for the contraction Old Saxon hiudigu and younger hiudu. Similar formations, but with different stems, are Latin hodie and Ancient Greek σήμερον (sḗmeron).

- Often used also where English would use tonight. heute früh, heute morgen, heute abend, heute nacht, or heute Morgen, heute Abend, heute Nacht, etc., are used chiefly when there is a need to specify (like English “this morning”, “this afternoon”, etc.).
