Etymology
Originally a shortened form of jean fustian (from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English Gene (“Genoa; Genovese”) + fustian (“strong cotton fabric”). The -s was added to jean under influence from the cognate (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old French Jannes (modern French Gênes).
