Etymology

From Latin iuvenem, juvenem, accusative of iuvenis (young), from Proto-Italic *juwenis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂yuh₁en- (young). Possibly a semi-learned term, as with Spanish joven. Cf. also moço.

Compare Galician xove, Spanish joven, Catalan jove, Occitan jove, French jeune, Italian giovane and Romanian june.
