From Proto-Slavic *kamy, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Balto-Slavic *akmō, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱmō. Cognates include Latvian akmens, Lithuanian akmuo, Ancient Greek ἄκμων (ákmōn, anvil, pestle, battering ram) and Sanskrit अश्मन् (aśman, stone, hammer, thunderbolt).
