From Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱmō ‎(stone, rock) (with the supposedly regular depalatalization of */ḱ/). Cognates include Old Church Slavonic камꙑ ‎(kamy), Latvian akmens, Sanskrit अश्मन् ‎(aśman), Ancient Greek ἄκμων ‎(ákmōn) and English hammer. Etymological twin of ašmuo.
