Hungarian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Finno-Ugric *kećä (“a kind of fish”). Cognate with Northern Mansi [script needed] (kāsəw). Possibly a Wanderwort. Compare Ossetian кӕсаг (kæsag), Georgian ქაშაყი (kašaq̇i).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]keszeg (plural keszegek)
Usage notes
[edit]- Be careful not to mix it up with the ponty. Even though some fishes under each of these genera overlap, the keszeg is usually a bonier fish which lacks the humped back (but not always).
