[edit]A borrowing, via other European languages (cf., e.g., French, English comfortable, German komfortabel, all with reflexes of the Latin suffix -abilis), ultimately from Late Latin confortō (“strengthen greatly”), itself from Latin con- (“together”) + fortis (“strong”).
