Etymology

A borrowing, via other European languages (cf., e.g., French, English comfortable, German komfortabel, all with reflexes of the Latin suffix -abilis), ultimately from Late Latin confortō (strengthen greatly), itself from Latin con- (together) + fortis (strong).
