A borrowing, via other European languages (cf., e.g., (deprecated template usage) [etyl] French, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] English comfortable, German komfortabel, all with reflexes of the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin suffix -abilis), ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Late Latin confortō (strengthen greatly), itself from Latin con- (together) + fortis (strong).
