Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kopьcь (heap), from *kopъ (see *kopa) + *-ьcь, akin to *kopati (to dig), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kop-, probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (to strike, beat).
