Etymology 1

From match +‎ -less, modelled after or partly continuing (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English makeless (having no peer or equal, matchless), equivalent to make +‎ -less. Compare Swedish makalös (incomparable, matchless), Danish mageløs (matchless).
