Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *mɛːŋʔ (mouth), from Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Kri meengq ("language"), Semai miing (cheek), Khmu [Cuang] miəŋ ("to chew"). Related to miếng (piece).

Attested in the Annan Jishi (安南即事, 13th century) as (MC mjaengX).
