     Chỉ có giai cấp quyền quý như các vương hầu, công chúa, các thế gia vọng tộc và các phú hộ mới nuôi nô tì. Nô tì là con nhà nghèo bị cha mẹ bán cho các nhà quyền quý hoặc phú hộ. Cũng có trường hợp người độc thân vì quá nghèo nên tự bán mình làm nô tì như mẹ của vua Lê Uy Mục.

     Only the aristocracy (vassals, princesses, nobles and bourgeois) was entitled to keeping slaves. Slaves were children sold off by their poor parents to the aristocracy. There were cases where desolate people, for abject destitution, sold themselves off into slavery, such as Emperor Lê Uy Mục's mother.
