Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *ɲɔːmʔ (“to dye; to lacquer (teeth)”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *nɟum ~ *nɟuum ~ *nɟuəm ~ *nɟəm (“dark in colour”). Cognate with Muong nhuỗm (“to dye”), Mon ယောံ (yòm, “dark in colour”), ခယောံ (həyòm, “dark; dusky”), Khmer ជាំ (cŏəm, “bruised; dark; stained”). Compare Chinese 染 (nhiễm, “to dye”).
