Etymology

Borrowed from Low German Uur, from Proto-Germanic *ōra, *ūra- (ferriferous sand), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)wūr-. However, compare Irish úir (soil, earth) and Proto-Germanic *auraz (wet earth, sand, mud).
