From Javanese ꦥꦤꦶꦠꦿ (panitra, secretary), from Old Javanese panitra, prefixed pa- +‎ citra, from Sanskrit चित्र (citrá, picture). Equivalent to peng- +‎ citra. Semantic loan from Dutch griffier (registrar).
