Etymology

From a Vulgar Latin root *petīre, from Latin petere, present active infinitive of petō, from Proto-Indo-European *peth₂-. Compare Old Neapolitan pezzire ("to ask/beg for alms"), Italian pezzente (beggar), Spanish and Portuguese pedir.

a peți (third-person singular present pețește, past participle pețit) 4th conj.

  1. to propose, ask to marry, often through an intermediate, such as the woman's family
  2. to sue (seek by request, petition)
