[edit]Borrowed from Musi pempek, from Hokkien 阿伯 (ābó, “paternal uncle, old man”). Doublet of apek. Non-cognate with Indonesian empek, Javanese ꦲꦼꦩ꧀ꦥꦺꦏ꧀ꦲꦼꦩ꧀ꦥꦺꦏ꧀ (êmpèk-êmpèk), Indonesian pepek.
