Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *pait- (gown, cloak), a derivation with the suffix -kë. Cognate with Gothic 𐍀𐌰𐌹𐌳𐌰 (paida, tunic, shirt) and Ancient Greek βαίτη (baítē). A loanword from Gothic is also phonetically possible. Orel considers it a derivation from petë, reconstructing Proto-Albanian *patika.[1]
