Inherited from Middle French roustir, from Old French rostir, from Frankish *rōstjan (to roast), from Proto-Germanic *raustijaną (to roast), from Proto-Indo-European *reus- (to crackle, roast). Germanic cognates include Old High German rōsten. Compare Italian arrostire and Spanish rostir.
