Etymology

From Proto-Austroasiatic *raːŋʔ (daylight). Cognate with Khasi rang (fine weather), Khmu rʔaːŋ, Bahnar rang (light) and Khmer ស្រាង (sraang, to glimmer). Shorto (2006) connects this term to sáng.
