Likely derived from Old Chinese (OC *k.rˤaŋʔ, “clear, bright”) (B-S).

Probably not directly related to Proto-Vietic *p-laːŋʔ (bright) (< Proto-Mon-Khmer *plaaŋʔ). The expected reflex of this root in modern Vietnamese would be the unattested **tráng.
