Etymology[edit]

From r/woooosh, a subreddit (discussion forum) on the American social news aggregation and discussion website Reddit in which Redditors post about Internet users who misinterpreted sarcastic statements as earnest, i.e. the joke went over their head.[1] The subreddit name is thus taken from the onomatopoeia whoosh, representing the sound of a joke ostensibly flying over one's head.[2] On Reddit, subreddits can be converted into hyperlinks by typing out their name in full, preceded by r/.
