From the intermediary English ranunculus or directly from translingual Ranunculus, from Latin rānunculus (small frog) + -in (chemical compound).

  1. An unstable glucoside found in plants of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). On maceration, it is enzymatically broken down into glucose and the toxin protoanemonin.
