Dutch

Etymology

From raar + vogel, translating Latin rara avis. Note that although raar descends from the Latin word, it now mostly means "strange" instead of "rare" (zeldzaam).

Noun

rare vogel m (plural rare vogels, diminutive raar vogeltje n)

  1. a rare bird, a strange, unusual or exceptional person
De nieuwe buurman was maar een rare vogel. The new neighbour was a rather strange fellow.
