Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: vo‧gel

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Dutch vogel, from Old Dutch fogal, vogal, from Proto-Germanic *fuglaz.

Noun[edit]

vogel m ‎(plural vogels or vogelen, diminutive vogeltje n or vogelijn n)

  1. A bird, feathered animal
  2. A gaai, a feathered target in archery or shooting
  3. (figuratively, slang) A dude, cat

Usage notes[edit]

The word vogel is one of the few words where the obsolete Dutch diminutive suffix -lijn can still be encountered: vogelijn(little bird) is chiefly poetic and can be found in poems and songs, but is not often used elsewhere.
