Finnish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Likely a descriptive word, compare risahtaa. Germanic origin has been proposed (compare Icelandic hrís (brushwood) and Swedish ris (twigs in a heap)), but considered unlikely for phonetic reasons.[1][2]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈrisu/, [ˈris̠u]
  • Rhymes: -isu
  • Syllabification: ri‧su

Noun[edit]

risu

  1. stick, dry twig
  2. brickbat (criticism or uncomplimentary remark)
Aikakauslehdissä on usein "ruusuja ja risuja" -niminen osasto kehuja ja kritiikkiä varten.
It's quite common for magazines to have a section called Bouquets and Brickbats for compliments and criticisms.
